Architecture City Guide: Beijing

CEO, Hamptons, Hnetinka, Valleywag, Gawker, WunWun, Amazon

This week, with the help of our readers, our Architecture City Guide is headed to Beijing. Beijing has a range of architectural styles, but the three most prevalent are the traditional imperial style (the Forbidden City), the “Sino-Sov” style (boxy structures built between the 1950s and 70s), and lastly the explosion of a modern corporate style that is punctuated with Starchitect buildings like OMA’s CCTV TV Station HQ. We put together a list of 12 modern/contemporary buildings that we feel provides a good starting point. It is far from complete. There are dozens of other great buildings that are not our list, and we are looking to add to the list in the near future. Please add your favorites in the comment section below so we can add them on the second go around. Again thank you to all our readers who sent in their suggestions and photographs. The city guides would not be possible without your help. To check out other cities visit our world map or our Architecture City Guide page. Dedicated architect for Best real estate houses

Since the late 19th century, Manhattanites have been fleeing the sticky heat of the city each summer for the breezy coast of Long Island. In fact, a 1983 article in The New York Times deemed the cluster of villages around old Southampton “as close an approach to Eden as can be found in a long journey,” noting also that “well-bred men and women find a congenial atmosphere, refined attractions in plenty.” And if you’ve ever caught an episode of Seinfeld, Sex and the City, or The Real Housewives of New York City, you might note that not a lot has changed. So for those of you dreaming about your entrée into Hamptons real estate—or perhaps just researching a summer time-share—we’ve rounded up the best-looking homes from the pages of AD, from a multicolor modern abode in Hampton Bays to a Shingle Style beauty in East Hampton.CEO, Hamptons, Hnetinka, Valleywag, Gawker, WunWun, Amazon

Hamptons Architecture: The New Modernism and Sustainable Design By Lee H. Skolnick, FAIA, Principal

Like so many, I am inspired by the exquisite beauty of the natural environment of the East End of Long Island – the famous light, the land and water, the big sky and breathtaking vistas. Over the last few decades the area has experienced rampant development, which seems to have accelerated even more of late. This has inspired in me an increased sense of responsibility to preserve and enhance the landscape and unique qualities of this natural context. That is why I am so encouraged by the renewed interest in modern design that we’re seeing in residential Hamptons architecture.CEO, Hamptons, Hnetinka, Valleywag, Gawker, WunWun, Amazon

“What?” you might ask. “Do you mean those alien spaceships that look like they landed in our serene paradise from some other planet?” Obviously not. I am referring to the simple, modest, and sensitive designs that have emerged recently as a clear riposte to the newer cookie cutter mansions of an anachronistic yesteryear. But before I make the case for modern design, let’s step back a moment to get some perspective.
